Advanced SIMOS 18 Direct-Injection Remapping Strategy

In this WinOLS remap training, we calibrate the Siemens SIMOS 18 ECU used in the Audi S1 turbo petrol engine.

SIMOS 18 is a torque-based DI ECU where torque request determines boost, air mass, fuel, ignition timing, and camshaft control. Professional tuning requires coordinated modification of all these systems.

All remapping follows Schiller Tuning calculation-based methodology derived from extensive SIMOS 18 VAG tuning projects.

Torque Model & Driver Demand Remapping

    Maps Explained

    • Driver Wish
    • Maximum Engine Torque
    • Torque Limiter
    • Gear Torque Limit
    • Torque Monitoring

    Units & Axes

    • X-axis: RPM
    • Y-axis: Pedal / Load
    • Values: Nm

    Remapping Method

Torque targets are increased progressively across RPM. All limiters and monitoring thresholds are aligned to prevent torque intervention.

    Safe Change Range

    +10% to +25%

    Effects

    ✔ Stronger acceleration
    ✔ Higher boost request
    ✔ Faster throttle response

    Risks

    ✖ Torque intervention
    ✖ Gearbox overload
    ✖ Limp mode

Boost & Air Load Control Remapping

    Maps Explained

    • Load Request
    • Boost Target Pressure
    • Boost Limiters
    • Wastegate Duty Cycle
    • Turbo Protection

    Units & Axes

    • Pressure: mbar absolute
    • Load: % or mg/stroke
    • Axes: RPM vs Load

    Remapping Method

Boost is raised according to torque increase and turbo efficiency range. Wastegate maps are recalibrated to stabilize boost control.

    Safe Change Range

    +120 to +250 mbar

    Effects

    ✔ Higher cylinder filling
    ✔ Increased torque
    ✔ Faster turbo spool

    Risks

    ✖ Turbo overspeed
    ✖ Overboost faults
    ✖ High EGT

Direct Injection Fuel & Lambda Calibration

    Maps Explained

    • Lambda Target
    • Full Load Lambda
    • Fuel Base Map
    • Component Protection Lambda
    • Injection Quantity

    Units & Axes

    • Lambda (λ)
    • Fuel: mg/stroke
    • Axes: RPM vs Load

    Remapping Method

Full-load lambda is enriched under boost to control temperature and knock. Fuel quantity is recalculated from airflow increase.

    Safe Range

    λ 0.78–0.85 under boost

    Effects

    ✔ Knock safety
    ✔ Cooler combustion
    ✔ Turbo protection

    Risks

    ✖ High fuel consumption
    ✖ Catalyst stress

Rail Pressure & Injection Timing Remapping

    Maps Explained

    • Rail Pressure Target
    • Rail Pressure Limit
    • Injection Timing (SOI)
    • Injection Window
    • DI Correction

    Units & Axes

    • Pressure: bar
    • Timing: °CA
    • Axes: RPM vs Load

    Remapping Method

Rail pressure is slightly increased to support higher fuel mass. Injection timing is optimized for combustion efficiency.

    Safe Change

    +5–10% pressure

    Effects

    ✔ Better atomization
    ✔ Stable DI combustion
    ✔ Higher fuel delivery

    Risks

    ✖ HPFP stress
    ✖ Injector wear

    Ignition Advance Optimization

    Maps Explained

    • Base Ignition
    • Full Load Ignition
    • Knock Correction
    • IAT Ignition
    • EGT Retard

    Units & Axes

    • Degrees BTDC
    • Axes: RPM vs Load

    Remapping Method

Ignition is advanced where knock margin exists due to richer mixture and improved charge cooling.

    Safe Range

    +1–3°

    Effects

    ✔ Higher torque
    ✔ Faster combustion
    ✔ Efficiency gain

    Risks

    ✖ Knock
    ✖ Piston damage

    Camshaft Timing (VVT) Optimization

    Maps Explained

    • Intake Cam Advance
    • Exhaust Cam Timing
    • VVT Torque Optimization

    Units & Axes

    • Crank angle degrees
    • RPM vs Load

    Remapping Method

Cam timing is adjusted to improve cylinder filling and turbo response in tuned torque zones.

    Effects

    ✔ Improved midrange torque
    ✔ Better spool
    ✔ Combustion efficiency

    Torque Monitoring Alignment

SIMOS 18 torque monitoring maps are recalculated so ECU torque model matches new tuned torque output, preventing intervention or faults.

Frequently Asked QuestionsQuick answers to common questions about our services
Because SIMOS 18 calculates boost and fuel from torque request. If limiters remain stock, ECU will reduce power.
What boost increase is safe for Audi S1 turbo?
To reduce combustion temperature and prevent knock while allowing higher load.
Why adjust rail pressure in SIMOS 18 tuning?
Yes, small safe advances near MBT improve combustion efficiency and torque output.
