What Is Start of Injection (SOI) in Diesel ECU?

The Start of Injection (SOI) map controls the exact crankshaft angle (in degrees Before Top Dead Center - BTDC) when fuel injection begins. It is one of the most critical maps in diesel ECU calibration, as it directly governs:

    • Combustion timing
    • Peak cylinder pressure
    • Exhaust gas temperature (EGT)
    • Emissions (NOx vs PM)
    • Engine noise and efficiency

By shifting injection earlier or later, tuners can significantly influence how efficiently the engine burns fuel and converts it into torque.

Why Start of Injection (SOI) MAP Matters in ECU Remapping

If SOI is too early → Higher NOx, harsh combustion, possible knocking
If SOI is too late → High soot (PM), lower efficiency, EGT rise

A professional tuner adjusts SOI to balance between power, economy, and emissions  especially in performance tuning, EGR-off tuning, or DPF delete scenarios.

     Formula (Simplified):

Injected Energy → Cylinder Pressure → IMEP → Torque

And this entire process starts with:

SOI angle → Fuel burn rate → Combustion pressure curve

Therefore, SOI is the root of how efficiently fuel converts to torque.

How to Find Start of Injection (SOI) Maps in WinOLS

In WinOLS, SOI maps are often indexed by:

    • Engine Speed (RPM)
    • Fuel Quantity or Torque Request

Values are usually in degrees BTDC and may range from 0 to 30+.
    To manually find SOI maps:

    1. Search for 16x16 or 16x12 maps indexed by RPM and IQ/Torque
    2. Look for axis or value labels showing angle (e.g., 10°, 15°, 20° BTDC)
    3. Check patterns: values should increase with load, then decrease slightly at high load/RPM

If needed, use the SOI maps in conjunction with Duration and IQ maps for full injection timing calibration.

     Practical Tuning Notes:

    • Advancing SOI slightly at mid-load improves fuel economy
    • Retarding SOI at full load helps reduce NOx, but increases EGT
    • Don’t over-advance SOI in high-boost scenarios  it may cause pre-ignition-like behavior
    • Always consider rail pressure and duration maps when tuning SOI

What You’ll Learn in This Episode

In this episode, we teach you:

    • What SOI is and how it works scientifically
    • How to find SOI maps manually in WinOLS
    • How to adjust SOI for performance, economy, and safety
    • How SOI interacts with fuel quantity and duration maps
    • Real-world examples of SOI tuning mistakes and how to avoid them

     Why This Matters

Mastering SOI calibration puts you ahead of average tuners. This is the map that defines the start of combustion   and with it, you control noise, torque, emissions, and engine health.

If you want to tune like OEM engineers do, learning to command the SOI map is non-negotiable.

It defines the exact crankshaft angle when injection begins. It influences combustion efficiency, noise, torque, and emissions.
Correct SOI improves torque response, fuel economy, and smoothness. Incorrect SOI can cause knocking or smoke issues.
Look for maps indexed by RPM and fuel quantity, with output values in degrees BTDC (usually 8–25). Pattern recognition and map overlay help.
Too early: high NOx, rough engine, knocking - Too late: poor combustion, high EGT, smoke
